| Kata is the essence of Karate. It is a series of postures, moves and techniques that have been handed down from Sensei to student for hundreds of years. As students learn Kata, they view the movements from different perspectives. As a new kata is learned, the student looks at the obvious techniques. Seisan kata appears to be a series of blocking and striking techniques. This is a fundamental level of understanding of the movement of kata. This view is typical to the rank of Sho Dan. Once a student reaches the Dan ranks it is important to look at the other aspects of kata. Many of the techniques can be seen as arm locks, seize and control techniques and strangulation moves. These techniques are intermediate and advanced bunkai. |
