Grand Master Shimabuku Founder of Isshinryu Karate-Do
In January of 1956, Master Shimabuku held a meeting with his students and proclaimed his new system as “Isshinryu.” The system was still developing and over the course of the next 19 years, Isshinryu would go through many changes. Master Shimabuku took a great deal of heat from many of the other Okinawan Masters for teaching the vertical punch to everyone. They knew the effectiveness of this technique and considered that it should not be demonstrated to the masses, especially foreigners. There was a period of time when Master Shimabuku gave in to the pressure and taught Isshinryu with a corkscrew punch. Later, he changed it back to the vertical punch.
